How Long Does It Take to Mount a TV? (By Wall Type & Screen Size)

Four TV wall mount types on red background

A standard TV mounting installation takes anywhere between 40 minutes and 2.5 hours. The exact duration depends on four key variables:

Size:

  • Small to Mid-Sized Displays (<50″, <35 lb): 40–60 minutes. Easily handled, aligned, and mounted by a single handyman.
  • Large to Extra-Large Displays (55″–85″+, 40–100+ lb): 60–90 minutes. Large TV’s block sightlines to bracket hooks and weight may require two handymen.

Mount Type:

  • Fixed / Low-Profile Mounts: 30–45 minutes. Simple alignment on a single structural plane with minimal change.
  • Tilting Mounts: 45–60 minutes. Requires setting friction tension and dialing in vertical tilt.
  • Full-Motion / Articulating Mounts: 60–90 minutes. Requires multi-axis leveling to prevent screen tilt or sagging when the cantilever arm is fully extended.
  • Over-Mantel Pull-Down Mounts: 90–150 minutes. Requires installation, adjusting gas-strut counterbalance tension, and setting mechanical stops.

Backing material

  • Standard Drywall with Wooden Beams (Fastest & Easiest: 30–45 minutes): This is the most common setup in single-family homes. The handyman uses a stud finder to locate the wooden framing posts hidden behind the drywall, drills small starter holes, and screws the TV bracket directly into solid wood.
  • Metal Studs (Common in Condos and High-Rises: 60–90 minutes): Many modern apartments and commercial buildings use hollow, thin metal framing instead of wood. Regular wood screws will strip right through this thin metal and pull out. The handyman has to drill wider holes and use special fasteners (called snap toggles or toggle bolts) that slide through the hole and flip open inside the hollow metal beam to clamp the mount firmly in place.
  • Brick, Concrete, or Cinder Block (Heavy Duty: 60–90 minutes): These walls are strong enough to hold almost any TV, but drilling into them takes extra effort. The handyman needs a specialized hammer drill to cut through stone or brick, must vacuum out all the masonry dust, and installs heavy-duty concrete screws or metal anchors that expand as they tighten.
  • Old Plaster Walls (Pre-1950s Homes: 60–100 minutes): Older homes often have plaster walls held together by thin strips of wood (lath). Plaster is brittle and cracks easily if you rush. The handyman has to work slowly, tracking down hidden wooden framing with magnets and pre-drilling wide clearance holes so the plaster doesn’t crumble or split when the heavy screws go in.

Wire Concealment Method

  • External Surface Raceways: 15–30 minutes. Measuring, cutting, and sticking paintable channels to the wall surface.
  • In-Wall Low-Voltage Cable Drop: 30–45 minutes. Cutting access holes, fishing HDMI/audio lines through the wall cavity, and installing brush plates.
  • UL-Listed In-Wall Power Relocation Kit: 45–75 minutes. Cutting two stud-bay openings, fishing building-rated NM-B wire through wall insulation, securing electrical boxes, and installing the recessed outlet and power inlet.
